THE FRIDAY NIGHT BBQ AT THE HOME OF BOB AND LAURA DAVIS

This annual event is growing in attendance each year as a beginning volley in the Reunion Weekend. This year there were  over 70 in attendance and the food was outstanding with a variety of meats "on the Barbie", veggies to die for and an array of fine wines, beer and other cold drinks. No pictures were taken at this event except "selfies", so you'll just have to "imagine what Bob Davis looked like in an apron" and come out next year to join the fun.
It was outstanding!

THE BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS AT UNIVERSITY VILLAGE

This special annual event of Bob Shoup is held at University Village and is an early introduction to the
Reunion's guest speaker, which this year is Pete Alamar, a Kingsmen who graduated in '83  and earned three letters as an offensive guard/offensive tackle, one at Western Oregon and two at Cal Lutheran and played on two national playoff teams, one at each school. He has coached Special Teams on five teams that won at least 10 games - two at Arizona, two at Cal and two at Stanford.  He has coached on 12 bowl teams. This last year, Alamar helped the Cardinal lead the nation in punt return average. Ty Montgomery averaged 19.8 yards per return and had two touchdowns, and freshman Christian McCaffrey averaged 17.1 yards per return.

Pete reminisced positively about his Cal Lutheran years and it was very evident that he is very comfortable in his present position and  career. He was in attendance with his wife, Tina, and this event has been the one event that honors and introduces the wives of Kingsmen football players, coaches and player / coaches.

University Village provides  the perfect environment for this event. Their acknowledgement of and friendship with Coach Bob Shoup and the 5th Quarter Football Club of CLU Alumni football players is a credit to their organization and their contributions to the Cal Lutheran community.

THE GOLF FEST AT LOS ROBLES COUNTRY CLU

To sum up the performances of our "divitors" this year would be to say they all ended up standing too close to their ball...after they hit it...and have all agreed to attend a "class for challenged putters" before they come next year!

The first team up included Bob Davis, Laura Davis, Lynn Thompson and Al Kemphert and their play can be best described as a series of tragedies oscured by an occasional miracle, or that they followed four steps of play: 1) swing, 2) swear, 3) Look for the ball, and 4) Repeat.  They had a great deal of fun, though.

Hank Aaron once said it took him 17 years to get 3000 hits in baseball...and at this First Annual 5th Quarter Football Club Golf Fest, Gary McGinnis did it in one afternoon!  His team, nevertheless, which was the second starting team and included his wife Gail, Mike Sheppard and Gary Hamm, did finish 5 under par. Gary was the spearhead behind this year's golf event and did a great job.

Teeing up third was the team of Rick Shoup, Larissa Shoup (Rick's daughter), and Pete Alamar (Stanford University's Special Team's Coach and this year's guest Reunion speaker) and Bob Trevathan.  Before watching Rick play, I had never considered golf an "extreme sport", but his divits can be best described as "major geologic events!"  His daughter, though is a real doll; did you see the smile on that girl?

The fourth group up included Bob Shoup (who used to teach golf), George Ferkins, Frank Reiman and Doug Tapking. George Ferkins was heard asking Frank Reiman what he felt he would have to shoot to be the leader and he said, "The rest of the field!

The group that gathered in "all of the marbles" was Howie Sonstegard, Kenny Calaustro, Jim Thompson and Joe Cappolla with a winning score of 11 under par. Howie also had the longest drive on hole 7 and was the closest to the pin winner on hole 8.

This Golf Fest was really fun and is expected to become an annual event with growing participation. See you next year!

STANFORD UNIVERSITY CARDINALS

Our theme for this year's 5th Annual Reunion Banquet was "the Year of the Coaches".Pete was asked to come and share with us all his "take" on Cal Lutheran as a football school, his remembrances of his playing years and how those experiences have led him to Coach the way he does today. It was extremely rewarding and certainly underlined that the "coaching and football culture" that began during "the Shoup Years" and has carried on since...is the foundation of what successful coaching is. We invite those who missed his presentation to review his profile in this year's program.

The Davey Spurlock Fighting Heart Award

The recipient this year of the Davey Spurlock Fighting Heart Award was Bill Swiontkowski and Davey was in town to make the award presentation himself. A special surprise for Bill was that his brother Marc, a gifted Orthopedic Physician for numerous professional sports teams in Minnesota was in attendance to join in the celebration.
