So, on November 23rd, 1985, CLU and the Schools that make up the Western Football League sat equal at 5 wins CLU and 5 wins WFL schools. One game left to determine if Cal Lutheran by the end of the year could even "hold its own" in the WFL.
The final school and game was CLU versus Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, a very tough competitor.

At the end of the game, CLU owns a very hard fought victory of 29-24 and the WFL is no longer willing to argue whether CLU is "up to the job". END OF YEAR TALLY: CLU 6 Wins, WFL 5 Wins.
At the end of the game, because CLU had no field lights, the team asked Coach Shoup if the field lights could be left on so everyone could "bask in the glow", and the picture above shows that moment...in fact Coach remembers that the team was on the field enjoying this for over an hour after the game.
Bob Shoup remembers one more thing about that game...the Coach for Cal Poly SLO was fired the following week. |
