| The Gadfly is a 5th Quarter member that meets weekly at the Lazy Dog Café in the City of Thousand Oaks with other gadflies to “let their hair down” and share their lives and their “observations and opinions” with each other…with Cal Lutheran, football, mutual friends and family at the heart of the discussions. |

Why does the group call itself, “The Gadfly?”
During his defense when on trial for his life, Socrates, according to Plato’s writings, pointed out that dissent, like the tiny gadfly that irritates the horse, is easy to swat, but the cost to society of silencing individuals that are irritating can be very high. Socrates said, “If you kill a man like me, you will injure yourselves more than you will injure me.”
The role of a gadfly, then, is to swarm around what we enjoy, honor and respect…and to stand “on our tiptoes of dissent” and whip everyone into a fury, all in the service of truth and what is right…and not right…in our opinion…for the benefit of Cal Lutheran and this wonderful community.
So, watch for “Gadfly notices” …and join us for friendship, a bite to eat or a glass of wine…or just buzz around. |
