This will be a remarkable weekend celebrating the Cal Lutheran University community and its remarkable accomplishments in football, on and off the field.

Rod Marinelli, a CLU Team Captain and NAIA All-American Offensive Tackle, a member of CLU’s 1971 National Championship Team, and now Defensive Line Coach for the Dallas Cowboys, will be the Key Speaker for the Celebration Banquet and Reunion. Rod is a master of what is known as the 4-3 defensive alignment in football, a defensive strategy he pursued in Tampa for over ten years, during which the Buccaneers had more sacks than any other franchise in the NFL. Following his tenure in Tampa, he became the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears for Lovie Smith where his statistics continued to be impressive. In his 3 years in the “Windy City”, two of those years the Bears were in the top 10 in total defense and in the top 5 in defensive take-aways, with 44 in 2012. Dallas had only 16, which is undoubtedly why Dallas hired him away from Chicago.

When Marinelli talks about life in the National Football League, he points to the difference fundamentals, work ethic, attention to detail, leadership, passion and commitment truly make. He says his experience at Cal Lutheran gave him the coaching philosophy he uses today. Players come first, he explains. "You want to create a great environment for coaches to teach in and for players to learn in. CLU is a great teaching school, and it always has been. The coaches made it special in terms of developing guys who wanted to be teachers and coaches."

To truly succeed you must have such a profound love of what you are doing that you will not allow anything to compromise or interfere with your desire and preparation to be the very best that you can be.

This will not only be a remarkably exciting event for alumni, students, faculty, and anyone who loves football, but a wonderful networking opportunity for the entire Conejo Valley Business Community.

Tickets: $75 per person or $650 for a table of ten.

Keep an eye on the 5th Quarter website over the next few days for additional information on how to register and pay for this event.

Everyone is welcome – All players, all years (and their gals), coaches, cheerleaders, businesses, and Cal Lutheran fans of every kind.

The Social Hour starts at 6:00 PM. The Program & Entertainment begins at 7:30 PM.

A remarkable fact about the Cal Lutheran football program is the fact of how many of these young men have gone into football coaching. We are just now beginning to count these men; 165 at last count coaching high school, college and in the National Football League.

On the Saturday morning of June 29th at 9 AM, a special “Breakfast of Champions” and clinic will take place for coaches at Cal Lutheran. Watch the 5th Quarter website between now and the month of June for updated news on this event and many others. SPONSORED BY THE
