NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR! |
It was an incredible year that passed with cheers, smiling faces, proud Kingsmen with hearts ready to burst, coaches, wives and alums with tears in their eyes and a wet, happy coach raising his arm in the air and pointing to heaven. It is great to be Number 1!
December 4th 1971 was California Lutheran's finest hour. The hopes and dreams of ten years were real; national recognition at last.
The Titan's from Westminster were a legend in their own time in the East. The tough kids from Coal miners and steel workers playing for a 120 year old school with a bona fide giant for a coach were defending champs and rated number one having gone undefeated in 24 games. Westminster just seemed unbeatable.
A funny thing then happened to the Titans on their way to the championship. They lost.
At the end of the game, it was the Kingsmen's crown that was held in the air and it was no fluke. In the end the star Titan runner was on the bench, their cocky quarterback was throwing towels and the vaunted Westminster team was experiencing the panic of being behind with time running out, something Cal Lu had experienced earlier in September.
The headlines Sunday read, "CLC No.1" in type so large it had not been seen since V-J Day. The entire country read it on the wire services and newspapers, heard it on four radio broadcasts and saw it in color on NBC Sports. The surfer kids from Southern California playing for a new church school on government loans with no traditions and $400 "scholarships" were national champions. |
